Today is the 4th of July. As I sit here typing on my computer I think back to what this very same day has looked like in years past. I think about the first 4th of July in 1776. Where a gathering of men stood for what they felt was right. Then to think about it in the 1800’s what they might have been taking place. There was the “Jubilee of Freedom” which was a celebration honoring the 50th year of the Declaration of Independence. Then in the 1900’s what it would have looked like. Thinking about the men that where fighting in WWII, what it must have felt like fighting for their Nation and the word on this day.
Then I think about the times I have celebrated the 4th. All the money spent on fire woods for saving or “chores”. The neighborhood cookouts with 40 to 50 people in my front yard laughing and eating together. Now that I can look back, I never thought about it when I was younger, I never thought about what it meant or what it stood for. I knew what the day stood for, but I never really celebrated that, I celebrated the fireworks. Now in my first 4th of July in my own house I am going to celebrate things in a new way. I am going to honor the Men and Women that over the past year have given of themselves in many different ways to make this blog possible. Those who have died in battle, to those who have given the tears and sweat, those who have given their money, and those who have given those that they love.
So for me this is not a normal 4th this is one of memory. Thinking back about my 4th of July’s the times where I was holding my first sparkler, then the time that my dog, Sonny, ran over the flame things that blind you if you look at them, so naturally do. Then the time os shooting fire works at each other, smoking my first cigar with Mr. Jim as I lit bottle rockets, lighting myself on fire a few times, the times that I was out of the country on missions, and then last year when I split my food open at my friends family’s lake house and spent 4 hours in the ER….
This year I am enjoying the Freedom I have and praying for it to continue. Thank you God. May America return to You.
Blessings.
